Hockey

Hockey is one of the most popular sports in the world, played in more than 100 countries.

Hockey is an exciting and fast-paced team sport. The aim of the game is to move the hockey ball around the pitch with the hockey stick and score in the opponent’s goal. Goals are only counted if they are scored from within the D, the semi-circle in front of the goal)

Squads consist of 18 players, with 11 players on the pitch at one time and featuring rolling substitutions. Matches consist of four periods of 15 minutes, with the team scoring the most goals winning.

Hockey is a great way to develop social, team and communication skills. In England alone, it is estimated that around 140,000 individuals play at club level with a further 15,000 at university or college. It is one of the most popular sports in the country for participation, as well as a rapidly growing spectator sport.

Did You Know?

• Hockey has been involved in the School Games National Finals since the event’s conception.
• In a full hockey game, players can travel as far as five miles while running around the pitch.
• Typically, a goalkeeper has 0.2 seconds to react to a penalty corner.
